The Humane Society of the United States sent an undercover investigator with a hidden camera into every pet store that sells puppies in Virginia. You won’t believe what they found.
It’s been proven time and time again that most pet stores purchase puppies from puppy mills. Investigators traced the sources of more than 2,000 puppies shipped to Virginia pet stores over seven months.
They found widespread lies and omissions – all seemingly designed to provide false assurances to convince people into buying expensive puppies from mills that are “growing” these puppies in the most deplorable ways ever.
Some of the things they found:
A puppy in one store was so sick that he was gasping for air and could barely stand. He had just been declared by a “vet” the day before to be healthy.
One store told the investigator that they buy from small local breeders. But the truth is they buy from a Nebraskan puppy mill with a long list of Animal Welfare violations.
Another store claims in their advertising that they don’t buy from puppy mills, and the staff told the investigator that they too get their puppies from small local breeders. Yet, this store has received puppies from several notorious puppy mills in Arkansas and Missouri that have already been cited for many violations.
The findings of this investigation, and other pet store investigations in New York, Chicago, and Texas, is the vast majority of pet stores are supplied by puppy mills, no matter what their sales people tell you.
