When a stray puppy wandered onto an army base in Iraq, the soldiers all quickly fell in love with him. They named the dog Ollie. One soldier in particular, Former Army Specialist Ken Wyrsch, became especially close with the dog.

Ken took the dog under his wing and raised him. The man and dog spent all their time together while Ken was serving duty. “He was there when we left on our missions, he was there when we got back,” he told CBS SF.

Time went by. The puppy grew and Ken spent as much time with him as he could. But then the day came when ken had to leave Iraq and return home to California.

The whole army base was being dismantled.   Ken was heartbroken. He feared the dog would end up alone on the street, and maybe even used as target practice. The general view of animals was not very favorable in Iraq.

And Ollie was such a gentle and loving dog. What would become of him? The dog was a lover, not a fighter. He never would have survived the harsh, even cruel, treatment that animals face in that country.
