Tracy Matkea, who lives in Arizona during the winter, was out for a ride on one of her young colts with her dog, Becky Jo, when the unimaginable happened.
Tracy and her husband Butch live most of the year in Alberta, Canada, but they spend four months of the year in Arizona working with their horses.
Their dog, Becky Joe, the 4-year-old Australian shepherd-border collie mix, was out with Tracy when she was taking a young colt for a ride in the desert.
All of a sudden the horse got spooked and took off. Tracy doesn’t remember much of what happened, but she knows that her foot got stuck in one of the stirrups and she was dragged for about half a mile.
Tracy hit her head on a rock and was knocked unconscious.
Then the dog sprung into action. Apparently the dog stayed with Becky for a few minutes, but quickly figured out she needed help.
So the dog ran back to the house to find Tracy’s husband. She stayed at the end of the driveway, barking until Butch came out of the house.
Butch got into his 4×4 expecting the dog to get in with him. But instead, the dog went running into the woods.
Butch realized the dog was acting very strangely and very determined; so he knew he better follow her.
