Gavel the German shepherd puppy was part of a police dog academy training program at the Queensland Government House. But he was fired from the academy because he was just too social.
This dog would much rather roll over and have his belly rubbed than stand at attention and look menacing.
Trainers quickly realized the dog was too playful and friendly to be a K-9 dog. But because of his friendly nature, the dog had become very popular with the Governor’s staff, so they found him a job more suitable to his “sociable” nature.
They decided to give him a job at the Government House greeting visitors.
Gavel was named the first official vice-regal dog of the territory. He’s got lots of responsibilities in this position that he’ll have to live up to – welcoming tourists, attending important functions with the governor and his wife, and giving cuddles to stressed out staff members.
