K-9 dogs are tough dogs. They are driven to protect their partners and to catch bad guys without giving a thought to their own safety.

Nicky was an eight-year-old Belgian Malinois dog who worked with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department for six years.

This dog had already survived a brutal machete attack, but refused to give up his place in the team. Within two months after the attack, the dog was back to working happily with his partner Sergeant Eric Kearns.

Sergeant Kearns and the dog were responding to a call of an armed and dangerous man wandering in the streets of a Las Vegas neighborhood. Nicky had been deployed to apprehend the suspect, but was killed in the crossfire when the suspect opened fire on the police.

This dog was an integral part of the LVMPD. He was as important as any human officer.

The entire Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department showed up to the dog’s memorial service, including the K-9 units.
