When you leave your dog at a pet care facility, you expect them to be well taken care of. Sometimes things go horribly wrong as they did for Brian Cudahy and fiancé Roxanne Ullman.
Brian and Roxanne left their puppy Patches at Sacramento Pet Resort and Spa. The puppy was acting a little skittish and nervous about the situation, but Brian hugged him and told him it would be okay.
The next morning, Brian received a phone call from the center saying that Patches had escaped by digging underneath a fence.
Brian and Roxanne didn’t live in the area, so with broken hearts they spent hours and hours searching for Patches and posting flyers everywhere. They were so worried and scared but could find no sign of their dog. If you have a pet, I’m sure you know how scary this must have been.
Finally, two weeks later, Nate Cinder, who works at the Sacramento SPCA, found the dog while on his work to work.
“He ran out in front of the car in front of me and everybody got together and made sure he was not going anywhere,” Cinder said.
Patches was a full five miles away from the center from which he escaped. Nobody knows what he did, or how he took care of himself, during the two weeks he was missing. But Brian and Roxanne are definitely going to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
In the meantime, Sacramento Resort and Spa has made repairs to their fence and hopes that the dog community will trust them again and give them a chance.
Instead of taking the reward money, Cinder asked the parents to donate it to the Sacramento SPCA.
Things happen. And we can’t always know ahead of time what we can do to prevent them. But thankfully, this one ended happily.
