A Victorville California family noticed that something was different about their dog Rexi, a golden retriever, when she was only 10 weeks old.
Rexi’s owner, Rachael Woertink, noticed she was limping so she took the dog to the vet thinking she had sprained her leg or something. But x-rays came back completely normal.
But as the family learned, this dog was anything but normal… She was special.
It wasn’t log before the dog lost all her strength in both her front legs. The family took her to another veterinarian who diagnosed the dog with a neurological problem.
The dog’s front legs do not function at all, and they extend backwards up past her head. The vet actually suggested that they think about putting her down.
Luckily for Rexi, she belongs to a family who has vowed to love her and stick by her side no matter what happens. They don’t have any children of their own, and this dog is their family. They are looking for a way to help her, and are not giving up.
The family has tried all kinds of things already with little luck.
They bought the dog a special wheelchair, but when she hits a rock it flips over. That won’t work – they don’t want her injured on top of what she already has to deal with.
They also tried a vest, which helps somewhat.
