Sometimes, the hardest part about having a dog is knowing when it’s time to let go. Our dogs don’t live as long as we do, and that can be very devastating. But then there are times when we have to let go because it’s best for the dog.
When you love your dog, but you have to give them away because it’s what is best for them – not because you don’t want or love them, but because it will give them the best possible life – that can be absolutely gut wrenching!
A homeless man made one of the hardest decisions of his life when he rode his bike into the East Bay SPCA in Oakland California. Running on a leash beside him was Sheba, a black Labrador/Shepherd mix.
The dog was limping on her left front leg. She had a severe injury and infection in that leg, and the man knew there was no way he could afford the care she needed.
But it wasn’t only the money for her treatment, he also knew she would need to be taken care of more extensively after her surgery.
The man explained to workers at the shelter what had happened. The dog’s name was Sheba. She had gotten in a fight with another dog and was hurt. She wasn’t healing and her injury was getting worse.
The dog’s leg was bandaged, but it was damp. Her leg was swollen and starting to smell. These are signs of obvious infection.
