Rachel Sylvester runs a unique rescue organization called Sidewalk Specials in Cape Town, South Africa. They take the “rescue” out of the shelter environment and straight to the public. Their goal is to get their dogs adopted as quickly as possible.
They run adoption days at busy Cape Town markets, have their dogs in foster homes wearing self-made “Adopt Me” jackets, and have a strong social media presence.
One day, Rachel received an extremely worrying text. Someone wanted to send her seven puppies in desperate need of medical care, but they wouldn’t give up the mother dog. The puppies were dachshund mix dogs.
When Rachel picked up the puppies, they were in terrible condition. They were covered in fleas, ticks and worms, and already missing their mother terribly.
Rachel knew that if the puppies were in this shape, there was no telling what kind of shape the mama dog would be in. She knew that, wherever she was, the mama dog probably needed help too.
Finally, the owner texted Rachel again, this time saying that the mama dog was in very bad shape. Her text read:
“The mommy dogs stopped eating, throwing up, hasn’t stood for two days. Can you collect her?”
