Kayla Filoon was walking dogs at the ACCT Philly Animal Shelter when she saw a pit bull just sitting calmly in his kennel starring at her.
Russ was a stray 4-year-old pit bull dog that had been picked up by the shelter. He was pretty beat up.
His fur was missing on his tail and his ears. And he was horribly skinny, weighing only 40 pounds when he came into the shelter.
As Kayla and Russ went walking in the yard, it didn’t take long before Kayla fell in love.
Russ just wanted to cuddle, even when they were out in the yard. He was just a sweet dog. He didn’t even bark at the other dogs.
Kayla learned that Russ also seemed to know basic commands like sit, down and stay. Obviously somebody had loved him at some point. She wondered how he ended up in the situation he was in now.
Kayla knew she had to have this dog. She called her mom, who laughed at her because she always wanted to take home the dogs that she walked. But this time was different.
The shelter was overcrowded, and they needed to euthanize about 15 dogs. Kayla was worried that Russ might be one of them because he was sick with kennel cough.
