A 2-year-old black Labrador mix, named Eclipse, has figured out how to ride the bus all by herself to get to the dog park.  She’s become a regular on the bus and has made lots of friends.

The dog’s owner, Jeff Young, lives next to the stop.  Sometimes he’s still smoking his cigarette when the bus comes.  But that’s not a problem.  Eclipse jumps on the bus, rides to the dog park, and Jeff catches up with her when he’s done.

“All the bus drivers know her. She sits here just like a person does,” fellow rider Tiona Rainwater told KOMO. “She makes everybody happy. How could you not love this face?”

Eclipse just sits there on a seat just like a human.  She watches out the window, and knows exactly where to get off the bus, three or four stops away.

Other bus riders enjoy watching her, and even snap selfies with her.  They’re all amazed by how smart Eclipse is and how she handles herself on the bus.

The Metro Transit is okay with her being there, “provided the animal isn’t a hazard and doesn’t create a disturbance.”  But they would prefer that the dog and owner ride together, and that the dog be on a leash.

Young said the tradition has been going on for a while.

“She’s been here the last two years, so she’s been urbanized, totally. She’s a bus-riding, sidewalk-walking dog,” he said. “Probably once a week I get a phone call. ‘Hi. I have your dog Eclipse here on 3rd and Bell,'” he recounted. “I have to tell them, ‘no. She’s fine.’ She knows what she’s doing.”
