Nana is a 4-year-old dog who had spent most of her life tied to a chain outside.
Even though she was still pretty young, the dog had already had two litters, but only one puppy had survived.
By the time the only surviving puppy was six-months-old, she also was chained in the same yard and already pregnant. Thankfully, a kind neighbor took her in.
Now the dog had just given birth to her third litter, but her luck was changing. All nine of her puppies survived this time.
But when her owner made a Facebook post about giving away his dog and her puppies, neighbors got concerned and stepped in.
Neighbors knew the dog’s situation and that the puppies were clearly not being kept in clean and safe conditions, and they wanted to do something. As soon as they saw the post, neighbors went into action.
Neighbors alerted the Faithful Friends Animal Sanctuary (FFAS) in Salisbury, NC about the dog’s living conditions. FFAS contacted Mr. Bones & Co. Rescue in New York for assistance.
“They sent us photos of the conditions she was living in and the state she was in,” Elli Frank, founder of Mr. Bones & Co, said. “Her babies were in a ditch we believe she moved them there to keep them cool in the hot July sun. It was heartbreaking.”
FFAS agreed to care for the dog and her puppies until the puppies were old enough to be weaned and could be moved to New York. Volunteers from Mr. Bones & Co. visited the dog and her puppies throughout this time to gain their trust and make the eventual journey and transition that much easier.
