Caleb Howard was only six-years-old when he was involved in a horrendous head-on car accident. Colonel was the dog who saved his life!
Caleb is from Huntsville, Utah. When in the car accident, he suffered from numerous broken bones and a traumatic brain injury that killed millions of cells and left him in critical condition and unable to move.
Already having lost his mother, brother and sister in the accident, his heartbroken family and the doctors didn’t expect him to live either. He was unresponsive and things weren’t looking good for him.
His recovery was so slow. Caleb’s father, Ben Howard, was beginning to lose hope. One of hospital staff suggested that Caleb receive a therapy animal.
When children are suffering from such extensive injuries, they can often start a downward spiral of feeling helpless and depressed. It’s hard to keep them motivated to keep doing the often painful, but necessary exercises.
Recently, many studies are starting to document the benefits of animal therapy in aiding recuperation. Organizations like Intermountain Therapy Animals in Utah are working to bring patients and therapy dogs together, oftentimes creating miracles with these special relationships.
So Caleb received a golden retriever named Colonel. Immediately when Colonel was brought into the room, Caleb made a dramatic improvement. His awareness of his surroundings tangibly improved almost immediately.
