Leia is a Cockier Spaniel dog who saved the day for a baby dolphin. Leia and her owner, Rich Wilcock, were out fishing on Criccieth Beach in the UK. Rich was in the water taking pictures when Leia alerted him to the problem.
Leia is normally a quiet calm dog. Generally you won’t see her barking much. But on this day, she was barking and running back and forth from the dolphin to where Rich was taking pictures.
He knew that something must be up if Leia was so excited about it, so he followed her and found the dolphin stranded on the rocks close to the beach.
Rich couldn’t get too close to the dolphin because he had waders on. Nobody else was around and he didn’t know what to do. But he managed to wade in about a foot and a half to get close enough to push the dolphin back out to sea.
It was a little bit of a struggle, but he got the dolphin loose and she swam off. He was able to record this while it happened.
The video below captured the rescue. You can see how Rich worked to get the dolphin loose, and then the dolphin swimming freely.
If it wasn’t for Leia, this could have been a tragedy for the dolphin, who Rich nicknamed Buddy. Rich doesn’t believe he would have seen it. Dogs can be incredibly smart and helpful.
