I always love hearing stories about different species of animals step in when needed to save a baby. It’s especially heartening when it’s a dog and an opossum.
Poncho was a baby opossum that became orphaned when his mother was hit by a car. It was heartbreaking when rescuers found the little baby desperately clinging to her dead mother in the middle of the road.
Rescuers had to figure out what to do to help this little baby opossum. These animals are not typically receptive to surrogate mothers, and without one, he would not survive.
Rescuers decided they had no choice but to try. They couldn’t believe what happened!
Hantu was a white German shepherd dog. She had no babies of her own, but had lots of love to give. When she met Poncho they quickly became inseparable. The dog took charge and took care of baby Poncho as if he was her own.
The two have become inseparable! In the video below, you see these two still together after two years. The dog rarely goes out without Poncho hanging on her.
The opossum mostly clings to the dog’s body with his little opossum feet. But the dog doesn’t care. She loves him and she’s his mother.
Even now, with the opossum fully grown, the dog still lets him cling to her back. They live together at the Rare Species Fund.
