The saddest thing about dogs is that their life span is so short compared to ours. As humans, we always have to say goodbye to our dogs way before we’re ready. But some dogs can really surprise us.
This dog wasn’t expected to live an extra long life when he was abandoned at a shelter when he was 16-years-old, but thankfully life is full of surprises.
Charlie is an adorable, sweet, loving dog. He thought he was living a happy, full life. But then his owners gave the dog to the Dogs Trust shelter after learning that they were about to have grandchildren.
At 16-years-old, the dog really didn’t have any great hopes of being adopted. Very few people are willing to take on elderly dogs.
But then, after just three weeks in the shelter, the dog was adopted by Stuart and Kim Smith. They were a couple in their mid-60s who had absolutely fallen in love with him.
His adopted dad, 64-year-old Stuart Smith, says the secret to his dog’s long life is being completely and utterly adored.
“When we saw him we knew instantly he was the one for us,” Stuart told Express, a U.K. publication. “When we walked past his kennel he just had that look in his eye – we knew he was special.”
Now, all of a sudden, this dog had a whole new life! He’s happy as can be and has a family that loves him. In fact, the dog is now 23 years old and is still going strong!
